Details & Synopsis
Lelouch vi Britannia is seventeenth in line to the throne of the Holy Britannian Empire, exiled to Japan, now called Area 11, a conquered territory with no rights and no name, following his mother's assassination and his sister's crippling. He attends school, plays chess for money, and waits.

Then a mysterious girl named C.C. gives him the Geass: the absolute power to command anyone to do anything, once, through direct eye contact. He puts on a mask. He calls himself Zero. He tells himself he is doing it to destroy Britannia.

He might even be right.

Produced by Sunrise and directed by Goro Taniguchi, who made s-CRY-ed five years earlier and clearly spent the intervening time thinking about political violence and what it costs, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion aired on MBS from 2006 to 2008. Fifty episodes across two seasons built around a chess match played in real time between a revolutionary who cannot stop lying and a childhood friend who joined the empire to reform it. The show understands that both positions are correct and neither of them will survive being correct.

The plot moves. This is the understatement of the decade. Code Geass was downloaded faster than most fansub groups could release it because no one watching it was willing to wait a week between episodes. The cliffhangers are not cheap, they are the load-bearing structure of a narrative that never stops accelerating. The Knightmare Frame battles are spectacular. The political maneuvering is genuinely intricate. The character work earns what it asks of you.

The ending of R2 is one of the most argued finales in anime history. It is also the correct ending. This is not up for debate.

Fifty episodes. Clear your schedule.

Ashford Academy & the Civilian Cost

The Life Lelouch Keeps Trying to Preserve

Ashford Is Not Filler to Lelouch

School Life · Nunnally · The Student Council

Ashford Academy is the life Lelouch claims he is fighting to protect. Nunnally is safe there, Milly's student council gives him a place where he can still be ridiculous and seventeen, and Shirley knows a version of him untouched by Zero's mythology. The school comedy matters because every return to Ashford shows what rebellion is costing him in ordinary human relationships.

Shirley's Father Makes Collateral Damage Personal

SPOILER!

Stage 12–14 · Narita's Aftermath

The Narita operation looks like a strategic victory until Shirley learns her father died in the landslide Zero caused. Lelouch can calculate acceptable losses when they are dots on a map; he is far less prepared when one of those losses walks into school grieving. Shirley turns the cost of rebellion from an argument into a person who loves him.

Memory and Loss

Shirley's Memories Become a Battlefield

SPOILER!

Stage 14 · R2 Turn 13

Lelouch erases Shirley's memories of him to stop Mao's manipulation and spare her further pain. R2 later restores what was buried, forcing her to confront multiple versions of Lelouch and the people around him. Her story is the clearest warning against Lelouch's habit of treating memory as another variable he can rearrange until everybody is safe.

Milly Represents the World That Keeps Moving Anyway

Student Council · Ordinary Time
Milly does not need a secret Geass or battlefield command to matter. Her festivals, schemes, graduation worries, and relentless attempts to make the student council behave like teenagers keep showing a social world that exists beside the war. As Lelouch loses the ability to live in that world, Ashford becomes less a hiding place and more evidence of the life he has traded away.
