Details & Synopsis
In the year 2071, humanity has colonized the solar system. Two bounty hunters, Spike Spiegel, a languid ex-syndicate hitman who moves like water and fights like something out of a Bruce Lee film, and Jet Black, a retired cyborg cop with a conscience, drift through space aboard the Bebop chasing criminals for cash they never quite manage to keep. They are joined, eventually, by Faye Valentine, a gambling amnesiac with a past she can't access; Ed, a hacker prodigy who exists somewhere between genius and feral animal; and Ein, a corgi of unusual intelligence.
Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and scored by Yoko Kanno, Cowboy Bebop is 26 sessions of the most confidently realized anime ever made. Jazz, blues, rock, opera, the soundtrack alone is a masterpiece. The animation is cinematic. The writing is lean and ruthless. Every episode is its own genre film. The finale is one of the best ever committed to any medium.
TV Tokyo initially aired it in 1998 and pulled it after 12 episodes for being too adult. WOWOW aired the complete series. Adult Swim launched with it in 2001. The rest is history.
You're gonna carry that weight.

Bebop Adventures Part 1
4 eps
4 canon 📷 4
Spike and Jet head to Tijuana chasing Asimov Solensan, a small-time syndicate runner who stole a supply of Bloody Eye and plans to escape to Mars with Katerina. Spike gets close enough to see that Katerina is not pregnant at all, but hiding the drugs beneath her dress, and Asimov's paranoia turns the escape into a running gunfight. With the police closing in and Asimov too far gone to stop, Katerina ends their flight herself before their ship is destroyed.

Debut: Session 1: Asimov Solensan
Spike goes after Abdul Hakim, a thief carrying a stolen briefcase that turns out to contain Ein, a genetically engineered data dog worth far more than the bounty. Hakim loses the dog almost immediately, and Spike spends most of the hunt trying to recover Ein without realizing what he has stumbled into. The researchers lose their prize, Hakim loses his bounty value, and Ein quietly becomes the newest passenger on the Bebop.

Debut: Session 2: Abdul Hakim
Spike and Jet stop at a casino where Faye Valentine has been ordered to recover a specially marked chip from a courier in exchange for clearing part of her enormous debt. Spike accidentally receives the chip instead, dragging the Bebop into a deal between the casino owner and a criminal syndicate that is worth far more than anyone first admits. Faye turns on everyone the moment she sees an opening, escapes with the money, and leaves Spike and Jet with one more reason to remember her.

Session 3
The Bebop crew captures Twinkle Maria Murdock, leader of the eco-terrorist Space Warriors, only to learn her followers are threatening Ganymede with a virus that genetically transforms humans into apes. When the government quietly cancels Murdock's bounty to bury the crisis, Spike and Jet are left chasing a target they can no longer get paid for. Faye joins the pursuit, and the crew manages to stop the missile attack at the gate, though Murdock and her men get a fitting dose of their own weapon.
Red Dragon Syndicate Part 1
1 eps
1 canon 📷 1
A Red Dragon power struggle puts Vicious back in Spike's path when Mao Yenrai, one of the syndicate elders, is murdered during supposed peace talks. Jet wants nothing to do with it, but Spike walks straight into Vicious's trap at the cathedral because this is one bounty he was never really chasing for money. Their confrontation exposes a piece of Spike's buried life with Julia and the syndicate, and he barely survives being thrown through the church window.
Bebop Adventures Part 2
6 eps
6 canon 📷 6
Spike becomes suspicious of Wen, a harmonica-playing child who has not aged since the Astral Gate disaster fifty years earlier. The boy's apparent immortality comes from the same accident that devastated Earth, and he has spent decades moving from guardian to guardian while remaining physically unchanged. Spike obtains a special bullet made from material affected by the gate and finally gives Wen the ordinary death he has been denied for half a century.
Spike's hunt for explosives smuggler Decker keeps crossing paths with VT, a legendary heavy-metal-loving trucker who openly despises bounty hunters. After Decker is killed before anyone can collect him, his cargo leaves Spike and VT trapped in an asteroid field with a ship full of unstable explosives. They survive by trusting each other long enough to escape, and Spike figures out the one thing generations of truckers could not: what VT's initials actually stand for.
On Venus, a young man named Roco Bonnaro sees Spike fight and begs to learn his martial arts, hoping to become strong enough to protect himself and his blind sister Stella. Roco is secretly carrying a rare Grey Ash plant stolen from gangsters because its spores can be used to restore Stella's sight. Spike tries to help when the syndicate catches up with him, but Roco is killed before he can escape, leaving Spike to deliver the medicine to Stella himself.
Satellite drawings burned into Earth's surface lead the Bebop crew to Radical Edward, an infamous hacker who turns out to be a barefoot, wildly eccentric girl living among the planet's ruins. Ed discovers that the real culprit is an abandoned AI satellite trying to communicate after decades alone in orbit. Spike and Jet bring the satellite in as a bounty only to learn that an AI does not count as a person, while Ed collects on a different deal and invites herself aboard the Bebop.

Session 9
Returning to Ganymede brings Jet face to face with Alisa, the woman who left him years earlier without ever explaining why. He wants closure more than a reunion, but the visit gets complicated when Alisa's boyfriend Rhint becomes wanted for killing a loan shark. Jet chases them down himself, hears at last why Alisa walked away, and arrests Rhint without pretending that catching him can fix what ended between them.
A strange creature begins biting the Bebop crew one by one, leaving Jet, Faye, Ein, and Ed unconscious while Spike searches the ship for whatever is hunting them. His improvised extermination campaign turns the darkened Bebop into a horror movie, complete with a flamethrower and no idea what he is actually fighting. The culprit is finally traced to an old refrigerator where Spike forgot a Ganymede rock lobster for more than a year, proving there are some leftovers even he should have thrown away.

Red Dragon Syndicate Part 2
2 eps
2 canon 📷 2
Faye steals the Bebop's cash and flees to Callisto, while Spike hears that someone named Julia may be on the same frozen moon and immediately abandons everything to follow the lead. There he finds Gren, a former soldier with his own history with Vicious, as Vicious arrives to complete a Red Eye deal with Gren's contact. Jet goes after Faye, Spike goes after Julia, and all of them end up circling a past that Vicious has already poisoned.
Lore · 3
Spike Spiegel vs. Gren & Vicious
Gren reveals how Vicious betrayed him after the Titan War, leading to imprisonment, experimental drugs, and the life he has been trapped in ever since. He turns the Red Eye exchange into revenge, but his battle with Vicious and Spike leaves him mortally wounded before he can settle anything. Spike learns that Julia really was connected to Gren, and Jet sends the dying soldier toward Titan while Faye finally returns to the Bebop.

Bebop Adventures Part 3
11 eps
11 canon 📷 11
A string of small gate-toll robberies points the Bebop crew toward Chessmaster Hex, one of the programmers who helped build the Astral Gate network. What looks like a giant criminal scheme turns out to be a decades-old act of revenge against the Gate Corporation, carried out so slowly that Hex himself has become a senile old man who barely remembers why he started it. Rather than drag him in for a bounty that no longer exists, the crew leaves him to his chess game.
Faye's pursuit of a familiar con man finally forces her to explain how she woke from cryogenic sleep decades after a shuttle accident with no memories and a mountain of medical debt. A lawyer named Whitney Hagas Matsumoto once convinced her that he loved her, then apparently died while leaving all of his debts in her name. When Spike and Jet capture the very-much-alive Whitney, Faye gets the truth but none of the lost years back.
Jet reunites with his former ISSP partner Fad when Udai Taxim, the criminal blamed for destroying Jet's left arm, escapes during a prison-ship hijacking. Hunting Udai gives Jet a chance to confront the case that ended his police career, but Udai reveals that Jet was actually betrayed from inside the ISSP. Fad kills Udai to silence him, then forces Jet into one final duel and dies after admitting that he was the partner who set Jet up.
The Bebop is broke, stranded, and out of food after a hit-and-run accident, leaving Ed and Ein to wander into town looking for something edible. They meet Domino Walker, a wanted dealer selling hallucinogenic mushrooms, and Ed realizes that catching him could finally put food on the ship. While Spike, Jet, and Faye accidentally sample the merchandise and disappear into their own hallucinations, Ed chases Domino across town and eventually trades the bounty for a bag of mushrooms that turn out to be shiitake.
A package addressed to Faye contains an old Betamax tape, which is useless until Spike and Jet make a ridiculous trip to the ruins of Earth to find equipment capable of playing it. Their first machine is the wrong format, but a second package eventually supplies exactly what they need. The tape shows Faye as a cheerful schoolgirl recording a message for her future self, giving her a glimpse of the life she lost even though she still cannot remember living it.
Spike takes the Swordfish II to Doohan, the stubborn mechanic who has kept the old racer flying for years, while Jet and Faye chase space pirates using a computer virus to hijack ships. The pirates turn the Bebop's own systems against the crew, forcing Spike into a dangerous intercept with the Swordfish and an improvised computer workaround from Ed. When Spike is knocked toward Earth, Doohan launches the restored Columbia space shuttle and pulls him out before atmospheric reentry kills him.
Spike accidentally witnesses an assassination by Mad Pierrot, a nearly unstoppable killer created by illegal ISSP experiments, and immediately becomes Pierrot's next target. Their first encounter leaves Spike badly wounded, but Pierrot sends him an invitation to an abandoned amusement park because killing him has become a game. Spike survives the rematch almost by accident, discovering that beneath Pierrot's weapons and conditioning is a terrified child who cannot cope with pain.
A cryptic message from an old associate leads Jet to Meifa Puzi, the man's daughter, and to a trail built around a strange form of cosmic feng shui. Meifa believes her father is still alive and uses a sunstone to follow the clues he left behind while Jet reluctantly helps her search. They find only his remains, but the final alignment lets Meifa hear the message he meant for her and finally say goodbye.
Spike's attempt to capture the Teddy Bomber is repeatedly ruined by Andy, a rich, theatrical bounty hunter who dresses like a cowboy and is far more interested in competing with Spike than understanding the case. Their rivalry becomes so ridiculous that even the bomber grows frustrated at being ignored while they fight each other. Spike finally catches the terrorist after Andy rides off to reinvent himself as a samurai, leaving the Bebop crew with no patience for either of them.
Faye infiltrates SCRATCH, a cult promising followers freedom from the body through digital transcendence, but stops reporting back once she reaches its inner circle. Spike, Jet, and Ed trace the movement to Dr. Londes and discover that the charismatic leader exists only as a networked persona created by a comatose teenage hacker. Ed breaks the system's hold while Spike reaches the hospital, ending SCRATCH by disconnecting the boy behind it.
Faye follows the clues from her old videotape back to Earth and finally finds the place where her childhood home once stood, only to discover that almost nothing remains. Ed encounters her father Appledelhi, who recognizes her only after some prompting and then races away to continue mapping meteor impacts. Faye returns to the Bebop because it is the closest thing she has to a home now, while Ed decides she needs to leave it, walking away with Ein after painting a goodbye across the deck.
Red Dragon Syndicate Part 3
2 eps
2 canon 📷 2
Vicious launches a coup against the Red Dragon elders, and the syndicate responds by hunting down everyone connected to him, including Spike and Julia. Jet and Faye are pulled into the attack on the Bebop while Spike finally reunites with Julia after years of chasing her memory. They decide to run together, but the syndicate closes in before they can get clear, and Julia is shot while escaping with Spike.
After Julia's death, Spike returns to the Bebop long enough to share one last conversation and meal with Jet, then leaves knowing exactly where he is going. Faye tries to stop him because the Bebop has become the home none of them expected to find, but Spike chooses to confront Vicious and the life he never truly escaped. He storms the Red Dragon headquarters, kills Vicious in their final duel, and walks down the stairs wounded as the screen cuts away on his last gesture.

Lanky, perpetually underfed, carries himself like someone who learned to move from watching Bruce Lee films. Former Red Dragon syndicate enforcer who faked his death and ended up on a bounty hunting ship going nowhere in particular. One eye sees the present, one eye sees the past, and the show is honest about which one he spends more time looking through. Everything about Spike is performance layered over damage layered over a man who decided a long time ago that he was already dead. The martial arts are Jeet Kune Do influenced, fluid and economical and absolutely lethal when required. The philosophy is whatever happens, happens. The reality underneath that is more complicated and he knows it.

Protagonist
Former ISSP officer. Lost his arm to a betrayal the show gives him time and space to explain on his own terms. The Bebop is his ship and the crew is functionally his family whether he uses that word or not. Grows bonsai. Cooks for everyone. Runs the bounty logistics with a practical competence that holds the entire operation together while Spike generates the chaos around him. Jet is the grounding wire. Paternal without being soft, principled without being rigid, and the most complete human being on the ship by a comfortable margin.

Protagonist
Arrived via cryogenic pod and a stack of debt that was not technically hers but got assigned to her anyway. Con artist, sharp, self-protective, presenting a front of pure mercenary disinterest that the show quietly and consistently undermines across twenty-six episodes. Faye does not know who she was before the freezing. The search for that person runs underneath everything she does and every wall she builds. The tough act is real. So is everything underneath it. One of the great slow-burn character studies in the medium.

Protagonist
Self-named. Genius hacker. Perpetually barefoot. Possibly the most gifted person on the Bebop by a significant margin and operating in a frequency the rest of the crew cannot quite tune to. The show uses that gap for comedy and for something considerably lonelier underneath the comedy. Her relationship with Ein is the warmest thread the series produces. What she decides at the end of her arc is Bebop being honest about what found family can and cannot fix, and it lands harder than it has any right to.

Data dog. Welsh Corgi. Hyper-intelligent in ways the show demonstrates consistently without ever fully explaining. Ein is aware of considerably more than the crew gives him credit for and the crew already gives him substantial credit. Operates as a unit with Ed. Cowboy Bebop is many things and one of them is a show that understood completely what it was doing when it put a good dog on a ship full of broken people.

Antagonist
Spike's former partner in the Red Dragon syndicate. Carries a katana and a bird. Cold in the specific way that people are cold when they have removed the parts of themselves that found warmth inconvenient. Vicious is not a complicated character and the show does not try to make him one. He is the path Spike did not take, or the path Spike was always going to end up back on, depending on how you read the series. The blade to Spike's gun. They were the same once and the show never lets you forget it.

Julia
SPOILER!Supporting
Appears late. Casts a shadow over everything that comes before her. The woman Spike left the syndicate for and the woman the syndicate used as leverage against him. Julia is Bebop's central absence, the figure whose presence in memory shapes Spike's entire trajectory across the series. The show earns her arrival carefully and deliberately, parceling out what she means through implication and silence long before she is on screen. When she finally arrives she means exactly what she was always meant to mean.

The shaman. Appears briefly, twice, and speaks to Spike in metaphors about stars and fate that are easier to dismiss than they are to forget. Laughing Bull is Bebop's spiritual register, the show acknowledging that underneath the jazz and the noir and the bounty-of-the-week structure there is something older and quieter being asked. He does not explain it. He does not need to. See you, space cowboy.
Past, Memory & Moving On
The Question Under Most Sessions
Can You Go Back After You Finally Find What You Were Looking For?
SPOILER!Cowboy Bebop repeatedly gives characters a route back toward an old person, place, profession or identity.
The return almost never restores what was lost.
The return almost never restores what was lost.
Why it matters
The show is less interested in whether the past can be found than in what a person does after discovering it has continued without them.
Spike, Julia and Vicious
Spike Never Fully Leaves the Red Dragon Story
Ballad of Fallen Angels Makes Vicious More Real Than Spike's New Life
SPOILER!The Red Dragon conflict pulls Spike away from Jet and the Bebop even though he knows he is walking into a trap.
What changed
The audience sees that the Syndicate is not simply old backstory. Spike still responds to it as though unfinished business has a stronger claim on him than the life he currently has.
Jupiter Jazz Turns Julia Into a Direction More Than a Person
SPOILER!Spike follows a rumor about Julia to Callisto. Faye has left, Jet is furious and the Bebop crew is visibly fracturing, but the possibility of Julia is enough to redirect Spike immediately.
Why it matters
For much of the series Julia functions through absence. Spike can organize his life around finding her before the viewer is allowed to know what a reunion would actually mean.
The Real Folk Blues Removes the Distance Between Memory and Reality
SPOILER!Spike finally reunites with Julia while the Red Dragon Syndicate is tearing itself apart.
Her death leaves Spike with no future version of the reunion to keep imagining.
Her death leaves Spike with no future version of the reunion to keep imagining.
What changed
The past is no longer somewhere else. Once it becomes present and is lost again, Spike chooses to finish the Red Dragon conflict rather than return to ordinary life on the Bebop.
Jet's Past
Jet Gets Answers and Keeps Living
Ganymede Elegy Gives Jet the Explanation He Wanted Too Late
SPOILER!Jet returns to Alisa looking for the meaning of a relationship that ended without his consent.
The answer does not restore the relationship.
The answer does not restore the relationship.
Why it matters
Jet's strength is not that the past matters less to him. It is that he can accept an answer he dislikes without turning the loss into a reason to destroy the life he has now.
Black Dog Serenade Closes the ISSP Chapter Without Reopening It
SPOILER!Jet is forced back into the world of his old police career when the people connected to his injury return.
Why it matters
The session resolves old betrayal without suggesting Jet should become his former self again. Closure means understanding what happened, not undoing the years after it.
Faye's Missing History
Faye Has the Opposite Problem: She Cannot Remember Enough
My Funny Valentine Explains Why Faye Distrusts Every Rescue
SPOILER!Faye wakes from cryogenic sleep without memory and immediately inherits debt and manipulation.
Why it matters
The person searching hardest for a past is also the person trained by experience to assume anybody offering help probably wants something from her.
Speak Like a Child Lets Faye Meet Herself
SPOILER!The Betamax tape contains Faye before the accident and before the amnesia, speaking optimistically to her future self.
What changed
Faye finally encounters undeniable evidence that the person she cannot remember was real. The tape gives her continuity without giving her memory back.
Hard Luck Woman Gives Faye an Address With No Home Left in It
SPOILER!Faye reaches the place connected to her childhood and finds ruins rather than restoration.
Why it matters
The search succeeds geographically and fails emotionally. That is one of Cowboy Bebop's clearest statements that recovering the past and recovering a life are different things.
Other People Carry the Same Problem
The Guest Characters Keep Repeating the Question
Gren Turns Betrayal Into the Only Future He Can Still See
SPOILER!Gren's story in Jupiter Jazz is built around what happened during and after the Titan War and his connection to Vicious.
Why it matters
Gren is another version of the show's warning. A person can survive the past physically while still letting it determine every direction afterward.
The Bounty Targets Are Often People Already Running Out of Road
SPOILER!Asimov, Roco and several later targets are introduced through the bounty system, but their stories quickly become more important than whether the Bebop crew gets paid.
Why it matters
The bounty board gives Cowboy Bebop an excuse to meet people at the exact moment their attempt to escape, change or start over is failing.
Whatever Happens, Happens Is Not the Same as Moving On
SPOILER!Spike often presents acceptance as a philosophy: events happen, people leave and the next job comes.
The Red Dragon story exposes the contradiction.
The Red Dragon story exposes the contradiction.
Why it matters
Spike is excellent at accepting things he does not care enough to fight. The series asks whether that attitude is still wisdom when the thing he cannot release is the past itself.
