Details & Synopsis
Sousuke Sagara is an elite, socially inept 17-year-old mercenary working for the anti-terrorist organization Mithril. His newest assignment: go undercover at a Japanese high school to protect Kaname Chidori, a hot-headed schoolgirl who might secretly possess world-altering Black Technology. The problem? Sousuke's idea of "blending in" involves blowing up shoe lockers with military-grade explosives because he thought a love letter was a threat.

Produced by Studio Gonzo in 2002, Full Metal Panic! is a masterclass in tonal whiplash. It takes a gritty, geopolitical mecha thriller and crashes it head-first into a chaotic high school romantic comedy. It shouldn't work, but it absolutely does. It set the stage for the pure comedy gold of Fumoffu and the incredibly dark, gritty warfare of The Second Raid.

24 episodes. Real mecha stakes. Unhinged comedy. A defining classic of its era.

MITHRIL & Black Tech

MITHRIL in the 2002 Series

A private anti-terror force with technology national militaries do not have

MITHRIL is the organization that puts Sosuke at Jindai High and gives the series its second world. At school he is an awkward transfer student. Inside MITHRIL he is Sergeant Sagara, an SRT Arm Slave pilot working with Mao and Kurz under a much larger military structure.
How you can tell
The Tuatha de Danaan, M9 Gernsbacks, ECS and the Arbalest repeatedly place MITHRIL technologically ahead of ordinary national forces.
Why it matters
The organization explains one of the central contradictions in Sosuke. He seems absurdly overqualified for everyday life because he really does spend the other half of his time working for people equipped to fight wars nobody else knows are happening.

The Whispered & Black Technology: What This Season Actually Tells You

Advanced knowledge without a solved origin
Kaname and Tessa are Whispered, people who can access scientific knowledge far beyond the normal technological level of the world around them. That knowledge is associated with the systems the series calls Black Technology.
The Breakdown
The 2002 anime shows the results before it explains the cause. Kaname suddenly understands technology she has never studied. Tessa can comprehend systems that should be beyond a teenager. Other people are willing to kidnap, drug and experiment on suspected Whispered to obtain the same advantage.
Why it matters
The mystery is supposed to remain a mystery here. This season establishes what being Whispered does to Kaname's life. It does not need later franchise answers about where the knowledge ultimately comes from.

Debut: Ep 004 - Kidnap

Gauron, A21 and the Missing Organization Chart

The 2002 anime shows the threats before it explains the larger network
The original series gives MITHRIL several connected-looking problems without asking the viewer to memorize the later franchise's complete enemy hierarchy. Gauron has access to Lambda Driver-equipped Arm Slaves. A21 obtains the Behemoth. Advanced technology keeps appearing in the hands of people willing to use it violently.
What changed
The old version of this Lore treated Amalgam as a fully explained global organization and Gauron as one of its clearly defined commanders. That imports later Full Metal Panic! information into a season that does not present the enemy that cleanly.
Why it matters
For the 2002 anime, uncertainty is part of the threat. MITHRIL knows impossible weapons are spreading faster than they should. The viewer does not yet need the later-series organization chart.

Debut: Ep 004 - Kidnap
