Details & Synopsis
A geological disaster tears part of Kanagawa away from mainland Japan and creates the Lost Ground. One percent of the children born there develop Alter powers, the ability to reshape matter through will. The mainland responds the way institutions usually respond to people it cannot control: containment, classification, and a special police force called HOLY.

Kazuma is a Native Alter who takes mercenary jobs because rent still exists after the apocalypse. Ryuho is a HOLY officer who believes control is the only thing keeping the Lost Ground from collapsing. Their powers are different, their politics are different, and both of them solve emotional problems by hitting the other one harder.

s-CRY-ed aired in 2001, directed by Goro Taniguchi years before Code Geass. Adult Swim picked it up in 2005, where Steve Blum's Kazuma helped the show fit perfectly beside the network's louder action lineup. It never became the biggest title in that block, but the people who watched it remember exactly how committed it was. No ironic distance. No apology for shouting attack names. No attempt to make the rivalry healthier.

Twenty-six episodes built around two men who would rather punch through the world than admit the other one understands them.

Alter Mechanics

Alter Materialization Turns the World Around the User Into a Weapon

Matter Reconstruction · Individual Expression · Will

Alter users break down nearby matter and reconstruct it into a form unique to them. That form is not standardized equipment. Kazuma gets Shell Bullet. Ryuho gets Zetsuei. Cougar gets Radical Good Speed. The power expresses itself differently from person to person and can evolve when the user reaches beyond the limits they previously accepted.
Why it matters
HOLY can recruit Alter users, train them and point them at targets, but it cannot make their powers uniform. The same individuality the organization tries to control is built directly into the abilities it depends on.

Kazuma: Shell Bullet

Base Alter · Arm Armor · Three Back Bullets
Kazuma's base Alter covers his right arm and shoulder in red-and-gold armor. Three fin-like "Bullets" on the shoulder provide explosive propulsion for his punches, turning a straightforward strike into the signature Shell Bullet impact.
Why it matters
This is the foundation of Kazuma's fighting style: direct, physical and built around committing harder rather than fighting at a distance. The later forms and how Shell Bullet grows beyond this base state belong in Kazuma: Three Evolutionary Tiers.

Ryuho: Zetsuei

Base Alter · Independent Humanoid · Ribbon Control
Ryuho's base Alter manifests as Zetsuei, a separate masked humanoid connected to him by long flexible ribbons. Unlike Kazuma's armor, Zetsuei can attack and defend away from its user, giving Ryuho reach, precision and control over the space around him.
Why it matters
The contrast is immediate. Kazuma puts his Alter on his own body and charges forward. Ryuho commands a separate presence with distance and precision. Zetsuei's later transformations belong in Ryuho: Three Evolutionary Tiers.
