Details & Synopsis
A geological disaster tears part of Kanagawa away from mainland Japan and creates the Lost Ground. One percent of the children born there develop Alter powers, the ability to reshape matter through will. The mainland responds the way institutions usually respond to people it cannot control: containment, classification, and a special police force called HOLY.

Kazuma is a Native Alter who takes mercenary jobs because rent still exists after the apocalypse. Ryuho is a HOLY officer who believes control is the only thing keeping the Lost Ground from collapsing. Their powers are different, their politics are different, and both of them solve emotional problems by hitting the other one harder.

s-CRY-ed aired in 2001, directed by Goro Taniguchi years before Code Geass. Adult Swim picked it up in 2005, where Steve Blum's Kazuma helped the show fit perfectly beside the network's louder action lineup. It never became the biggest title in that block, but the people who watched it remember exactly how committed it was. No ironic distance. No apology for shouting attack names. No attempt to make the rivalry healthier.

Twenty-six episodes built around two men who would rather punch through the world than admit the other one understands them.

APX Finished a Second Broadcast-Sourced Run, 2006

APX completed its own full 26-episode broadcast-sourced release in September 2006, giving the show two independent complete TV-capture fansubs from the pre-Blu-ray era.

Yasunari Toda's Manga in Weekly Shōnen Champion

Serialized in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion from June 2001 to May 2002, Yasunari Toda's five-volume s-CRY-ed manga ran alongside the anime. Tokyopop later became the confirmed official North American publisher.

Official English Graphic Novels

Tokyopop acquired North American publishing rights to the s-CRY-ed manga in 2003, releasing all five volumes in English. Scanlation activity wound down around the official release, the same pattern seen elsewhere on this site.

Bandai to Sentai to Discotek: Three Owners, One Long Gap

Bandai Entertainment released s-CRY-ed as six individual DVD volumes starting 2003, a complete six-disc box set in November 2004, then re-released it under the Anime Legends banner in September 2005 (three two-disc volumes) and again as the Anime Legends Complete Collection in October 2006. The anime premiered on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in late May 2005, after select episodes had already run on the network's Video On Demand service for nearly a year, with an acclaimed English dub starring Steven Blum and Jason Spisak.

Bandai Closes, Sentai Rescues It, Then Sits On It

Bandai Entertainment closed its North American home video operations in January 2012, leaving s-CRY-ed and a number of other Sunrise titles without a distributor. Sentai Filmworks announced it had rescued the license at Otakon 2013, but never actually released the show on DVD or Blu-ray. The license effectively went dormant for the better part of a decade.

Discotek Finally Gets It Out, April 27, 2021

Discotek Media announced it had licensed s-CRY-ed in May 2020, restoring a title that had been functionally unavailable on physical media since Bandai's 2012 closure. The complete 26-episode Blu-ray set, both English dub and Japanese with subtitles, released April 27, 2021, closing a gap of nearly a decade since anyone had actually put the show back on shelves.
