Details & Synopsis
The year is 1992. A six-episode OVA from AIC lands in Japan and begins quietly dismantling the walls between science fiction, comedy, and domestic drama in ways the medium was not quite ready for. By the time Pioneer localized it and VHS tapes started moving through anime clubs in North America, it had already built an underground following through the tape-trading networks that would eventually become fansub culture.

Tenchi Masaki is a perfectly ordinary Japanese teenager living with his grandfather near a Shinto shrine. He is about to have a very bad week. A space pirate named Ryoko, sealed away in a cave beneath the shrine for seven hundred years, gets loose, and within approximately forty-eight hours Tenchi's house is full: Ryoko, who oscillates between destroying things and fixating on Tenchi; Ayeka, a Juraian princess who considers Ryoko her sworn enemy; Sasami, Ayeka's little sister who is considerably more dangerous than she appears; Mihoshi, a Galaxy Police detective of supernatural incompetence; and Washu, the greatest scientific genius in the universe, who will tell you so unprompted.

Also Ryo-Ohki is there. Ryo-Ohki is a cabbit, part cat, part rabbit, part spaceship. She eats carrots.

Produced by AIC and directed by Hiroki Hayashi, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki began in September 1992. The original OVA series across its first two installments runs thirteen episodes and tells a story that begins as a harem comedy and gradually reveals itself to be something much stranger and more mythologically dense, a space opera built on top of a domestic sitcom, with royal lineages and ancient wars buried under jokes about hot springs and cooking.

This is where the Western harem genre came from. This is what the anime clubs were trading tapes of before Pioneer showed up with a box set. This is the foundational text.

When Hiroki Hayashi and Masaki Kajishima's Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki premiered as a 6-episode direct-to-video OVA on September 25, 1992 (followed by a Special episode and the 6-episode OVA 2 in 1994-1995), it became a pioneer of the 1990s harem sci-fi genre. Because no Western TV broadcast pipeline existed yet, anime clubs and tape-trading rings acquired high-bitrate Japanese Laserdiscs. Fan subtitlers used Commodore Amiga genlock hardware to overlay translated English subtitles onto S-VHS master cassettes, duplicating and mailing them across university campuses nationwide.

Fujimi Shobo's Comic Dragon Junior, 1994-2000 · "No Need for Tenchi!"

Hitoshi Okuda's manga, published in English as No Need for Tenchi!, ran in Fujimi Shobo's Comic Dragon Junior from December 16, 1994 to June 9, 2000, 12 volumes. It wasn't an expansion of the original OVA continuity, it was Okuda's own separate reinterpretation, known among fans as the "Okuda Universe," running in parallel to the original Kajishima-created OVA storyline rather than inside it. Early manga scanlators digitized imported tankōbon before official English volumes existed, hand-typesetting translated dialogue years ahead of Viz's commercial release.

Pioneer LDC was the Japanese parent company. The actual North American localization and release came through Pioneer Entertainment (Pioneer USA), a distinct distribution arm, releasing the 13 OVA episodes on Laserdisc and VHS. The dub included Matt K. Miller as Tenchi and Petrea Burchard as Ryoko, both confirmed cast credits; other cast specifics are not independently verified here.

Two Different Tenchi Shows Had Back-to-Back Toonami Premieres

Original OVA: July 3-19, 2000 · Tenchi Universe: July 20-Aug 24, 2000

The original 13-episode OVA run made its US television premiere on Cartoon Network's Toonami block from July 3 to July 19, 2000. A separate, related property, the Tenchi Universe TV series, had its own distinct Toonami premiere the very next week, July 20 to August 24, 2000, two different Tenchi shows with two different, back-to-back debuts on the same block.

Geneon Collapsed in 2007, Funimation Rescued It by 2012

Announced at Anime Expo, July 2, 2010 · Released December 4, 2012

Following Geneon's (formerly Pioneer) North American shutdown in November 2007, the original Tenchi Muyo! OVAs went out of print. Funimation announced it had rescued the rights on July 2, 2010, at Anime Expo, not Otakon. The actual limited-edition Blu-ray/DVD combo pack didn't release until December 4, 2012, over two years after the announcement, preserving the classic Pioneer English dub.
