The Member Side of AnimeHistory Just Got Better

AnimeHistory

has always been an archive first; but archives are a lot more fun when there are actually people wandering around inside them.
We have been doing a fairly large pass on the member side of the site over the last few days, particularly the Hub and Personal Galleries, with the goal of making AnimeHistory feel a little more social without trying to turn it into another social network.

The Member Hub

The Member Hub has been reorganized around the stuff you actually care about when you log back in. Reactions, activity from members you follow, followed discussions, and other things happening around your little corner of the site now have a much more natural home. Already a member? Log in and open your Hub tab from your profile.

Personal Galleries Got a Lot More Personal

Member galleries have also had a pretty substantial makeover.
The image is now properly the star of the page, with a small vertical gallery navigator beside it so you can quickly browse nearby uploads without losing what you are looking at. A position track and count label show you where you are in the full gallery, handy when someone has been uploading for a while.
Comments now live right alongside the image instead of feeling like something bolted onto the bottom of the page. Replies, reactions, and @member mentions make those little gallery conversations much easier to follow.
We are also tying member uploads more closely into the actual AnimeHistory archive.
If you upload something from Dragon Ball, for example, characters in that image can be tagged using the same character-tagging system used elsewhere in the gallery. So a piece of member fanart is not just sitting isolated on somebody's profile, it can actually become another path into Bulma, Goku, Usagi, Naruto, or whoever happens to be in it.
That is the kind of social feature I like. It adds something to the community and something to the archive.
Browse member uploads from any profile's Gallery tab, or contribute your own from the Fan Art and Wallpapers upload panels.

Social Stuff Is Fun When It Stays on the Website

I have been thinking about this a lot while building these systems.
  • Reactions are fun.
  • Following somebody is fun.
  • Seeing that someone replied to your ridiculous gallery comment is fun.
  • Opening AnimeHistory a couple days later and finding out somebody interacted with something you posted is fun.
What is considerably less fun is receiving six emails telling you about all of it.

Still Building

There are still a few rough edges in the new gallery layout that I am tweaking, especially around the image inspector and tagging controls, but the overall direction finally feels right.
The member side of AnimeHistory is starting to feel less like a collection of account pages and more like an actual little anime community living alongside the archive.
Which was kind of the point all along. 😛
