Captain of Squad 5. Calm, soft-spoken, the kind of person every junior officer in Soul Society describes as approachable and kind. The betrayal that closes the Soul Society arc is one of the great villain reveals in shonen anime, not because it comes from nowhere but because Bleach had been constructing it in plain sight and trusting you not to see it. Aizen does not want power in the crude sense. He wants to stand above the heavens, above the system that created him, above the laws that govern Soul Society and the world beyond it. He believes this is his right. The show takes his argument seriously enough that he is genuinely threatening rather than cartoonish, and his presence casts a shadow across everything that follows him.

Aizen's staged death does more than hide him. It turns captains and lieutenants toward one another while he continues moving behind the institution's authority. Hitsugaya suspects Gin, Momo is manipulated through grief, and Central 46's orders carry weight long after the people supposedly issuing them are dead. Aizen wins the first half of the arc by making Soul Society police itself for him.
Episode 60–61 · Complete Hypnosis
Aizen's Shikai is terrifying because the trick happened before the audience knew there was a trick. Anyone who witnessed Kyōka Suigetsu's release could have their senses manipulated afterward, which means eyewitness certainty becomes useless around him. The reveal retroactively explains the corpse, the confusion and why even experienced captains could be made to trust the wrong scene.
Episode 61 · Extraction
Aizen did not arrange Rukia's death because she mattered to him personally. Urahara had hidden the Hōgyoku inside her gigai, and the execution created a legal-looking route to destroy the soul surrounding it. Once Aizen takes the Hōgyoku and leaves with Gin and Tōsen, the series stops being a rescue story and becomes a war built around the thing Soul Society failed to realize it was protecting.

The top Espada are powerful enough to occupy Soul Society's strongest fighters, but defeating them does not solve the war. Barragan dies cursing the master he served, Starrk falls after fighting with a loneliness that mirrors his creation, and Aizen cuts Harribel down himself once he decides the Espada have failed him. The hierarchy Aizen built was always disposable to Aizen.
Episodes 203 & 215 onward · Decisive Battle
Aizen needs Karakura Town for his larger plan, so Soul Society replaces the real town with a replica and moves the population out of the battlefield. That preparation turns the conflict into the series' largest captain-level war: Espada, lieutenants, Visored and captains collide while Aizen waits behind the force meant to stop him.
Episodes 297–308 · Kamishini no Yari
Gin's loyalty was always harder to read than Aizen's confidence suggested. When he finally turns on Aizen, the move is tied to Rangiku and to knowledge of Kyōka Suigetsu's weakness that he spent years positioning himself to exploit. The attempt fails because the Hōgyoku has already made Aizen harder to kill than Gin calculated, but the betrayal finally explains why Gin stayed beside him for so long.
Episodes 306–310
Dangai training gives Ichigo the answer to Aizen, but not for free. Mugetsu overwhelms the evolved Aizen at the price of Ichigo's own Shinigami power. Urahara's seal finishes the job once the Hōgyoku stops carrying Aizen forward. The arc ends with the hero alive, his friends safe, and the power that defined the series draining away from him.

The apparent murder of Aizen had pushed Soul Society toward paranoia while the rescue chaos drew every major fighter out of position. When Aizen returns, the execution itself is exposed as part of his plan to remove the Hōgyoku hidden inside Rukia. The rescue succeeds, but the larger conflict changes instantly: Soul Society's enemy is no longer Ichigo's invasion. It is one of its own captains leaving with the power he wanted all along.

Aizen experiments on captains and lieutenants decades before his public betrayal, forcing Hollowfication onto the people who will become the Visored. It was simply the moment he finally stopped hiding.

Soul Society responds by stationing Shinigami in the living world, while Ichigo discovers that the Hollow inside him is becoming as dangerous to his confidence as the enemies outside.

Open page →The Hōgyoku sits underneath the major turn in Bleach's story. Urahara created it while researching the boundary between Hollows and Shinigami, then hid it inside Rukia's gigai. Aizen engineers Rukia's execution so he can take it, and later uses it to accelerate the creation of Arrancar and push himself beyond ordinary Shinigami limits. It is not merely a power-up object; it is the reason several apparently separate arcs turn out to be one plan.
After fusing with the Hōgyoku, Aizen begins changing beyond the captain who betrayed Soul Society. The transformations matter less as a clean ladder of named forms than as evidence that ordinary Shinigami and Hollow limits are no longer containing him. By the time Ichigo returns from Dangai training, Aizen believes the Hōgyoku has placed him beyond everyone left to oppose him. The finale turns that confidence into the opening Urahara needs to seal him.
