Sakura's older brother spends a heroic amount of energy calling her a monster, stealing food from her plate and acting like he is completely uninvolved in whatever weirdness keeps following the family. In reality, Toya is intensely protective of Sakura and possesses enough supernatural awareness to see spirits and recognize when something magical is wrong long before Sakura realizes he can. His closest relationship is with Yukito, and during the Sakura Card arc Toya finally gives up his own magical power to keep Yukito and Yue from disappearing. The teasing never stops, but beneath it Toya has been quietly watching over Sakura almost from the beginning.

Open page →Sakura spends much of the series trying to hide Kero, the cards, and her nightly adventures from Toya. Toya is far less unaware than she thinks. He can sense supernatural presences, recognizes Mirror even when the card is wearing Sakura's face, and understands that Yukito's condition is connected to something Sakura cannot yet fix. His silence is protective rather than oblivious.
Why it matters
Sakura is not carrying the magical side of the family entirely alone. Toya has been watching the cost build even when Sakura believes she has kept him outside it.
When Yukito finally collapses, Toya gets the private moment he has been trying to create and transfers his own supernatural power to Yue. The sacrifice stabilizes Yue and keeps Yukito from disappearing, but Toya loses the ability that allowed him to see spirits and sense the supernatural world so clearly. Sakura overhears enough to understand that her brother knew far more than she had realized.
What changed
The power shortage is solved by a family sacrifice Sakura did not ask for and cannot undo. Her growth as master has affected people far beyond the card battles themselves.

Open →Several cards show a capacity for attachment that goes beyond obeying a command. Mirror feels remorse after using Sakura's appearance to endanger Toya. Dash responds to Rei's kindness while recovering from injury. Later, Mirror willingly stands in for Sakura and Toya recognizes that she is not his sister, then thanks the card anyway. These moments make the deck feel less like an inventory of powers and more like a group of magical beings learning Sakura's world along with her.
Why it matters
Sakura's relationship with the deck is built through care as much as authority. That becomes important when she eventually has to make the cards truly her own.
