Soichiro Yagami is Light's father, a senior police officer and one of the leaders of the Japanese task force investigating Kira. He believes deeply in the law and refuses to abandon the investigation even when it begins placing his family directly inside it. L's suspicion of Light is especially painful because Soichiro must balance his duty as an investigator against his certainty that his son cannot be Kira. He repeatedly puts himself at risk rather than ask subordinates to carry burdens he will not carry himself, including during the operation against Mello's group. Soichiro's tragedy is that his moral clarity exists beside a deception he cannot see. Light uses his father's trust while still caring enough about him for that exploitation to hurt.
