The postwar story allows Minmay to outgrow the role everyone else assigned her during the war, including the role Hikaru assigned her in his imagination.

The final attack forces Hikaru, Minmay and Misa into the same crisis while the emotional question of the series can no longer be postponed.

The decision lands because the series has spent the postwar episodes removing every excuse to avoid it. Minmay is real and deeply important to him, but the life Hikaru has actually built has increasingly been the one shared with Misa.
Hikaru's choice does not turn Minmay into the loser of the story.
She is hurt, but she also reaches a clearer understanding of what singing means to her beyond celebrity, military usefulness or being the person Hikaru once imagined a future with.
