Hitomi Kanzaki is a high-school track athlete with a talent for tarot readings and an inconvenient habit of seeing things before they happen. During an ordinary practice session, a young swordsman named Van appears in front of her while fighting a dragon. Hitomi is pulled with him to Gaea, a world where Earth hangs in the sky as the Mystic Moon and kingdoms wage war using armored Guymelefs.

Van is not simply a warrior. He is the young king of Fanelia, and his kingdom is destroyed almost as soon as Hitomi arrives. Their escape brings them together with the elegant knight Allen Schezar and draws them into the expanding war against the Zaibach Empire. At the center of it all is Escaflowne, Van's ancient Guymelef, and a conflict where prophecy, probability and human desire become weapons as important as swords.

Escaflowne is unusual because none of its identities cancel the others out. It is a mecha series, a fantasy quest, a war story and a romance in the same twenty-six episodes. Hitomi's emotional choices matter to the mechanics of the plot instead of sitting beside them, while Van, Allen, Folken and Dilandau keep the war personal even when Zaibach's plans become enormous.

Western audiences encountered the series in several very different forms. Bandai released the original version for home video, while Fox Kids attempted a heavily reworked television version in 2000 and YTV carried it in Canada. That contrast between edited broadcast anime and the fuller original release makes Escaflowne especially at home in AnimeHistory's archive of how Western fans actually discovered these shows.

001 Fateful Confession Aired Apr 2, 1996 📷 325 ►
Hitomi Kanzaki expects the biggest event of her day to be telling track-team captain Amano how she feels before he leaves Japan. Instead, a tarot reading, a strange vision and a sprint on the school track are interrupted when a young swordsman named Van appears in front of her with a dragon close behind. Hitomi's warning helps Van survive the fight, and he cuts an Energist from the dragon's body as proof of his victory. Before either of them can make sense of what happened, a pillar of light takes Van away and carries Hitomi with him.

Hitomi wakes on Gaea, a world where Earth hangs in the sky as the Mystic Moon, and discovers that Van is the prince of Fanelia. Killing the dragon was his final rite before taking the throne, but his coronation is shattered when invisible Zaibach Guymelefs attack the kingdom. Van forms a blood pact with the ancient Guymelef Escaflowne and fights back while Balgus and Fanelia's defenders try to hold the invaders off. The resistance is not enough. Fanelia burns, its people scatter, and another pillar of light carries Van and Hitomi away from the ruins.

Separated from Van after leaving Fanelia, Hitomi is attacked on the road and rescued by Allen Schezar, a Knight Caeli of Asturia whose resemblance to Amano immediately gets her attention. Allen brings her to his fortress, where Van soon arrives with Escaflowne and reacts badly to the knight's easy confidence. A sword duel gives Van a painful lesson in how much he still has to learn, but there is little time to brood over it. Zaibach is already moving through Asturia, and Hitomi's visions begin warning her that the safety Allen offers may not last.

004 The Diabolical Adonis Aired Apr 23, 1996 📷 325 ►
Merle reaches Allen's fortress with the news Van has been avoiding: Fanelia has been destroyed. Hitomi then sees a vision of the fortress burning, and Dilandau's invisible Guymelefs turn that warning into reality almost immediately. Allen's soldiers cannot fight enemies they cannot see, and the fortress is overwhelmed while the group races for the Crusade. Even in the air they are not safe, because Zaibach's machines can fly. Van transforms Escaflowne into its dragon form and draws the attackers away, giving Allen and the others a chance to escape while placing himself directly in Dilandau's hands.

Van is taken aboard a Zaibach floating fortress and learns that the man directing the attack is Folken Fanel, the older brother everyone in Fanelia believed was dead. Folken explains that he survived his own dragon-slaying rite only because Emperor Dornkirk saved him, and he now believes Zaibach can create the ordered world Fanelia never could. Van refuses his brother's invitation to join him. Hitomi convinces Allen to risk a rescue, and their arrival gives Van the opening he needs to escape. The reunion leaves him free, but it also turns the war personal in a way the destruction of Fanelia alone could not.

The Crusade reaches Palas, capital of Asturia, where Princess Millerna welcomes Allen with enough warmth to make Hitomi immediately uncomfortable. Asturia looks peaceful, but King Aston has a non-aggression relationship with Zaibach and has no interest in turning Van's war into his own. Folken appears openly at court and tells Van more about why he chose Dornkirk, while Dilandau ignores the diplomacy and tries to settle the scar Van gave him. Hitomi's warning saves Van from the ambush. King Aston then decides to test Escaflowne's reputation by putting Van into a very unequal Guymelef match against three hired fighters.

Van survives King Aston's three-on-one test, but Hitomi is much more distracted by what she sees between Allen and Millerna. Watching the princess kiss Allen turns Hitomi's crush into real jealousy at exactly the wrong moment. Agents trying to draw Escaflowne into the open kidnap her and flee through Palas's canals, forcing Van into a chase with the Guymelef. He gets Hitomi back, only for Dilandau to launch another attack before anyone can recover. Asturia's attempt to stay neutral is becoming impossible, and the group is pushed toward another separation as Zaibach tightens its grip around the capital.

Van, Hitomi and Merle leave Palas rather than give Zaibach another excuse to punish Asturia and discover a dragon graveyard being stripped of Energists for the empire's Guymelefs. Van decides to destroy the operation, but the raid collapses when Hitomi is taken hostage. Merle's interference gives Van a chance to break free and wreck the stockpile, and the explosion tears open the ground beneath them. Hitomi falls into the crater and Van dives after her. Wings erupt from his back as he catches her, revealing that the angel from Hitomi's visions was Van himself. Back in Asturia, Millerna helps the imprisoned Allen escape to follow them.

009 Memories of a Feather Aired May 28, 1996 📷 325 ►
Van can no longer hide what the wings mean. His mother Varie was a Draconian, one of the winged descendants associated with the lost people of Atlantis, making Van's heritage another part of the mystery surrounding Escaflowne. Allen and Millerna catch up as the group heads toward the duchy of Freid, but Dilandau and the Dragonslayers attack before they can reach safety. Van fights them in Escaflowne while Hitomi's visions again pull her into the battle. Allen is badly wounded protecting her, turning what had felt like a romantic adventure to Hitomi into another reminder that people around her are being hurt for real.

The wounded Allen is brought to Freid, where the group meets Prince Chid, the young son of Millerna's late sister Marlene. A captured Dragonslayer named Miguel should be their best source of information, but Folken sends the Doppelganger Zongi to replace the monk Plactu and corrupt the interrogation from inside the castle. Under pressure, Miguel accuses Allen and the others of conspiring against Freid before escaping in a stolen Guymelef. Van pursues and kills him in battle, but the damage is done. Chid accepts the false testimony, and the very people who came to warn Freid about Zaibach find themselves arrested as traitors.

Zongi, still wearing Plactu's face, interrogates Hitomi and discovers that her visions can reach into him as easily as his deception reaches into Freid. Their psychic struggle leaves Hitomi apparently dead until Van forces her heart to start again. Chid finally gives Van and Hitomi enough freedom to investigate, and they follow Zongi to a meeting with Dilandau. Dilandau kills the Doppelganger over Miguel's death before turning on them, but the encounter exposes the conspiracy that framed Allen's group. They return to Freid cleared of treason, while Hitomi is left shaken by the possibility that seeing death may help bring her closer to it.

Freid's soldiers sacrifice themselves to delay Zaibach while the royal party retreats to the Temple of Fortuna. There Duke Freid reveals what the empire is really after: his family guards a surviving power of Atlantis, the same civilization whose ambitions once destroyed itself. Van tries to stop relying on Hitomi's visions by synchronizing himself more completely with Escaflowne, making every wound to the Guymelef a wound to his own body. The defense finally fails and Duke Freid is killed. Chid inherits both the throne and an impossible decision, handing the Atlantean power to Folken to end the slaughter while Escaflowne begins showing the cost of Van's deeper bond.

Van climbs out of Escaflowne covered in injuries that match the damage to the machine, confirming that their link has become dangerously literal. Millerna brings the group to Dryden Fassa, her wealthy fiancé, whose knowledge and money allow him to summon the mysterious Ispano builders capable of repairing Escaflowne. The restoration saves Van, but he immediately goes back into battle when Dilandau and the Dragonslayers arrive. Van destroys the entire unit in a furious counterattack. Victory gives him no relief. Three weeks after escaping Zaibach, everyone regroups in Asturia as Millerna and Dryden prepare to marry. Van nearly tells Hitomi what she means to him, but his awkward attempt comes out badly enough to leave her hurt and uncertain at exactly the moment Folken begins testing the Fate Alteration Engine. Zaibach engineers a chain of coincidences meant to push Hitomi toward Allen and separate her from Van. She initially resists because she knows Millerna loves Allen, but manipulated timing and existing attraction slowly do their work. Hitomi and Allen finally kiss just as Van comes looking for her. He sees them together and leaves, giving Dornkirk the emotional split his experiment was designed to create.

At the same time, Millerna asks Hitomi to read the cards about her marriage to Dryden. Hitomi sees a miserable future and an affair with Allen, but after everything that has happened with Allen and Van she lies, telling Millerna the marriage will be blessed. The wedding goes ahead on false reassurance. When Naria and Eriya attack immediately afterward with impossible good fortune protecting them, Hitomi realizes that attempts to force destiny can rebound in ways no one controls. Determined to stop making things worse, she surrenders herself to the sisters.

Their bodies break down, forcing them to abandon Hitomi and retreat, but Hitomi refuses to treat the dying Naria as an enemy and stays to help her. The sisters return long enough to stop the brothers from killing one another, then die in Folken's arms from the experiment he allowed. Their deaths finally break his faith in Dornkirk's methods. Folken has spent years believing controlled fate could end suffering; now he has proof that the control itself creates victims.

Zaibach attacks before she can answer. Hitomi's connection to Van lets her experience the battle through him, but what she feels is not heroic exhilaration. Van's desperate need to protect her is becoming bloodlust. Merle, meanwhile, tells Van to stop hiding what he feels for Hitomi. Their decisions converge across worlds. Hitomi chooses Van rather than safety, Van reaches for her, and the pillar of light brings her back to a Gaea already being consumed by the final war.

Van sends Hitomi away from the front while he and Allen continue fighting, and Hitomi goes to Folken searching for another way to stop the war. A pillar of light carries both of them directly to Dornkirk. Folken tries to kill the emperor, but the fate he has spent years manipulating turns the strike back on him: his broken blade pierces his own body. Folken dies as Hitomi's grief activates the machinery around them. Dornkirk returns as a disembodied presence to announce that the Zone of Absolute Fortune is finally being born.

Dornkirk's promised world does not end the war. The Fate Alteration Engine gives everyone's desires a direct path into reality, and the alliance immediately begins turning on itself as fear, rivalry and aggression feed back into the battlefield. Van confronts Dilandau, but Jajuka dies protecting him and his final words allow Celena to emerge again, forcing Allen to stand between Van and his sister. Hitomi reaches Van across the chaos and breaks the cycle before he can strike. Their bond does what Dornkirk's machine cannot: it changes fate without controlling anyone. The fighting stops, Dornkirk abandons his experiment, and Hitomi eventually returns to Earth knowing she and Van remain connected even across worlds.

The young king of Fanelia and pilot of the legendary Guymelef Escaflowne, Van meets Hitomi during the dragon-slaying rite required to claim his throne. He is proud, hot-headed and initially much better at charging into danger than explaining himself. Zaibach's destruction of Fanelia turns that recklessness into a personal war, while his blood pact with Escaflowne means the machine is never just equipment; damage to it can become damage to Van himself. Balgus raised him to fight and rule, but Van still has to learn the difference between protecting people and feeding his anger. His growing trust in Hitomi gradually becomes the relationship that pulls him back whenever revenge threatens to become his entire identity.

A Knight Caeli of Asturia, captain of the Crusade and pilot of the Guymelef Scherazade, Allen is introduced as the polished swordsman Van very much is not. His resemblance to Amano immediately complicates Hitomi's feelings, and Allen's natural charm does nothing to simplify the situation. He trained under Balgus, making him one of Gaea's finest swordsmen, but the controlled exterior hides a family history full of abandonment and loss. Allen's missing sister Celena becomes central to Zaibach's experiments, while his past relationship with Princess Marlene is eventually revealed to have made him Prince Chid's biological father. The romantic knight image is real, but so are the consequences of the life behind it.

A thirteen-year-old cat-girl from Fanelia who has followed Van since childhood, Merle treats protecting him as both sacred duty and personal business. She is jealous of Hitomi almost immediately and has absolutely no interest in pretending otherwise, which gives the early group dynamic much of its comic energy. Beneath the claws and possessiveness, however, Merle reads Van's emotions better than he does. She survives the fall of Fanelia, sticks with him through exile and repeatedly throws herself into danger despite having no Guymelef or royal title to hide behind. Her relationship with Hitomi gradually changes from rivalry to real friendship, and by the end Merle is often the person most willing to tell Van the emotional truth he is avoiding.

The youngest princess of Asturia would rather study medicine than behave like the decorative royal daughter her family expects. Millerna is intelligent, stubborn and openly in love with Allen, which places her directly in the same emotional mess surrounding Hitomi without reducing her to a romantic obstacle. She repeatedly uses her medical training when the group is injured and eventually leaves the comfort of Asturia to follow the people actually fighting Zaibach. Her arranged engagement to Dryden initially looks like another decision being made for her, but Millerna's relationship with him becomes more complicated once she sees the decent man underneath his merchant swagger. She spends much of the series trying to separate what she genuinely wants from what everyone else has decided she should want.

Zaibach's calm, one-armed strategist is introduced as the man directing the empire's attacks on Fanelia and Asturia, but his connection to Van makes the conflict personal almost immediately. Folken is Van's older brother and the original heir to Fanelia, believed dead after failing the same dragon-slaying rite Van later completes. Dornkirk saved his life, replaced his lost arm with a mechanical one and gave him a vision of a world where fate could be controlled well enough to end war. Folken joins Zaibach because he believes that promise. The tragedy is that he is intelligent enough to recognize what the empire is actually doing long before he can admit what his loyalty has cost. His eventual break with Dornkirk is less redemption by speech than a painful attempt to undo his own choices.

The commander of Zaibach's elite Dragonslayers is theatrical, cruel, vain and frighteningly quick to turn humiliation into mass destruction. Dilandau pilots a Guymelef with skill to match the arrogance, and Van's refusal to be intimidated becomes a personal obsession after their early battles leave Dilandau scarred and increasingly unstable. The attachment to the Dragonslayers is genuine despite the abuse directed at them, which makes their deaths one of the few things capable of breaking through the performance. The series eventually reveals the horrifying reason Dilandau's identity never quite fits together: Dilandau is the result of Zaibach's Fate Alteration experiments on Allen's missing younger sister, Celena Schezar. Jajuka's loyalty reaches back to Celena, not merely the commander Zaibach created from her.

The ancient ruler of Zaibach rarely needs to leave his machinery to reshape the entire war. Dornkirk is obsessed with discovering laws that govern destiny the way physical laws govern matter, and the empire's Fate Alteration technology exists to turn that obsession into a working system. The series reveals that he originally came from Earth as a scientist named Isaac, bringing knowledge that transformed a poor country into the industrial Zaibach Empire. His ultimate goal is the Zone of Absolute Fortune, a state in which human wishes can be made real by controlling fate itself. Dornkirk genuinely believes this can eliminate suffering, which is what makes him more dangerous than a ruler seeking conquest for its own sake. He treats destroyed kingdoms and manipulated lives as acceptable experimental costs.

The wealthy heir to one of Asturia's great merchant families arrives looking like a man who would rather negotiate a shipping contract than join a fantasy war, which is exactly why he works so well in the cast. Dryden is Millerna's arranged fiance, a scholar, businessman and collector of information whose confidence initially comes off as smug. He is also far more useful and generous than the stereotype suggests. His money and contacts help repair Escaflowne, while his knowledge of Leon Schezar's journal gives the group a path toward the Mystic Valley. Dryden understands that Millerna loves Allen and never pretends an engagement gives him ownership of her feelings. His humor and practicality make him one of the show's best late additions.

Fanelia's enormous general is one of the Three Master Swordsmen of Gaea and the warrior who helped shape both Van and Allen. Balgus once traveled to improve his swordsmanship, training Allen during those wandering years before returning to Fanelia after King Goau's death. To Van he becomes soldier, instructor and surrogate father, the adult who keeps the young prince grounded while the rest of the royal family disappears around him. His strength is almost absurd; Balgus can stand against Guymelefs without piloting one himself. When Zaibach attacks Fanelia, he stays behind to give Van and Hitomi a chance to escape. His death comes early, but his influence keeps resurfacing whenever either of his former students has to decide what kind of swordsman he wants to be.

Supporting / First Mate of the Crusade

Allen's loyal lieutenant aboard the Crusade, Gaddes is the sort of supporting character who quietly makes the entire adventure function. While Allen duels, Van broods and Hitomi has visions, Gaddes keeps the ship crew organized, helps manage repairs, survives attacks and generally acts like somebody remembered that a flying fortress requires actual adults to operate it. He respects Allen without worshipping him and is comfortable enough around his commander to show personality instead of standing around as a nameless subordinate. Gaddes rarely drives the grand mythology of Atlantis or fate, but he is present through much of the journey and becomes part of the reliable human texture around the main cast. In a series full of princes and destiny, his competence is refreshingly ordinary.

The silver-haired member of Folken's two leopard-woman followers, Naria serves Zaibach because she serves Folken, not because Dornkirk's ideology means anything to her. She and Eriya lost their parents to human prejudice when they were children and were saved by Folken after despair pushed them to the edge. That rescue becomes absolute devotion. Naria pilots the Silver Teiring and willingly accepts Zaibach's experimental Fortune Blood because it might give her enough manipulated luck to protect the man she loves. The enhancement works only temporarily before turning against her body. Her final actions are less about winning than reaching Folken again, and her death alongside Eriya becomes the event that finally destroys his remaining faith in Dornkirk's promise of a controlled, peaceful destiny.

The sisters operate almost as a unit, but Eriya's presence helps make Folken's Zaibach circle feel personal rather than purely military. She is not fighting because she dreams of empire. She is fighting for the person who once gave two abandoned children a reason to live. Like Naria, Eriya accepts the Fortune Blood experiment meant to manipulate probability in their favor. The artificial luck eventually collapses into physical ruin. The sisters die after returning to Folken, and their loss forces him to confront the human cost of the future he has been helping Dornkirk manufacture.

A dog-like beast-man who becomes Dilandau's last real subordinate after the original Dragonslayers are killed, Jajuka stands out because his loyalty is protective rather than frightened. He knew Celena Schezar when Zaibach first took her, cared for the terrified child and remained one of the few figures she trusted during the experiments that eventually created Dilandau. That history explains why Jajuka tolerates behavior that would drive almost anyone else away. He is responding to the vulnerable person buried inside the commander, not merely the violent personality on the surface. When Dilandau begins destabilizing late in the war, Jajuka stays beside him and ultimately dies protecting him. His final act helps Celena re-emerge, making his loyalty one of the few genuinely selfless relationships inside Zaibach.

Chid is formal, earnest and still young enough that adults can manipulate his trust, which is exactly what the Doppelganger Zongi exploits while framing Allen's party as traitors. Once the deception is exposed, Chid shows more courage than his age suggests and faces responsibilities no child should have to inherit. His family history also contains one of the series' quieter revelations: his mother Marlene loved Allen Schezar before her political marriage, and Allen is Chid's biological father. The truth gives Allen's protectiveness toward the boy a very different meaning even though Chid has been raised as Duke Freid's son and heir.

The ruler of Freid and father who raises Prince Chid, Duke Freid carries one of Gaea's oldest responsibilities: guarding the Atlantean power hidden beneath his country's religious traditions. Unlike kings who can treat Zaibach as a distant diplomatic problem, Freid eventually understands that Dornkirk's empire has come specifically for what his family protects. He receives Van, Hitomi and Allen after the false accusations against them collapse and prepares his people for a defense he knows may not succeed. During Zaibach's assault he chooses resistance rather than surrendering the secret immediately, buying time at enormous cost. His death leaves the young Chid to inherit both the duchy and the decision of whether preserving an ancient power is worth sacrificing everyone still alive to protect it.

Van and Folken's mother is a Draconian, one of the winged descendants associated with the people of Atlantis, and her heritage explains a part of the Fanel family that Van spends years hiding. Varie's marriage to King Goau makes her queen of Fanelia, but prejudice surrounding Draconians means her sons grow up knowing their wings can attract fear and suspicion. After Folken disappears during his failed dragon-slaying rite, Varie goes searching for him and never returns. She is therefore absent from most of Van's life but never irrelevant to it. Her memory connects the brothers to Atlantis, to their hidden wings and to the family loss that shaped both of them long before Zaibach turned them into enemies.

Allen's striking resemblance to Amano makes Hitomi's early attraction to the Asturian knight feel familiar before she understands what she actually wants. Amano also gives the Earth scenes something solid to return to. He witnesses Van's arrival and Hitomi's disappearance alongside Yukari, then appears again when Hitomi briefly returns home. He never becomes part of Gaea's war, but the emotional place he occupies helps measure how much Hitomi changes because of it.

She is also closely tied to the Schezar family's tragedy and is present when Celena returns in her original form, giving Allen one of the few people who can share the shock of that discovery. Eries can seem stern because she spends so much time telling Millerna what not to do, but she is not simply an obstacle. She represents the political and familial reality Millerna keeps trying to outrun.
