And fans building shrines to their favorite anime characters with everything they had.
No monetization. No SEO strategy. No content calendar. Just love.
Those sites were the foundation of everything. This site exists because of them.
We owe them everything.
Every fan who discovered anime through a fansub owes those anonymous translators, timers, encoders and distributors a debt that can never be repaid.
They worked for free. They got no credit. Many of them got sued.
And the culture they built became a billion dollar industry that forgot they existed.
AnimeHistory.org remembers.
The shoutbox was not efficient.
It was not threaded. It did not have reactions. You could not quote someone from three days ago. Half the conversations made no sense without context.
But it was alive.
You opened a fansite and there were people there, right now, talking about the episode that just came out, arguing about power levels, welcoming new members.
