The Bebop is his ship and the crew is functionally his family whether he uses that word or not. Grows bonsai. Cooks for everyone. Runs the bounty logistics with a practical competence that holds the entire operation together while Spike generates the chaos around him. Jet is the grounding wire. Paternal without being soft, principled without being rigid, and the most complete human being on the ship by a comfortable margin.

Why it matters
Jet's strength is not that the past matters less to him. It is that he can accept an answer he dislikes without turning the loss into a reason to destroy the life he has now.
Jet is forced back into the world of his old police career when the people connected to his injury return.
Why it matters
The session resolves old betrayal without suggesting Jet should become his former self again. Closure means understanding what happened, not undoing the years after it.

Why it matters
Cowboy Bebop opens with people trying to outrun a life that has already caught up with them. The Bebop crew will spend the rest of the series meeting variations on that problem while pretending they are only chasing bounties.
Spike and Jet pursue Abdul Hakim and end up with Ein, the data dog Hakim stole.
What changed
The failed bounty is more important than the money. The Bebop starts accumulating people and animals almost by accident, which becomes the crew's basic pattern for the rest of the series.
Spike and Jet meet Faye Valentine at a casino while a separate scheme involving a valuable chip collapses around all three of them.

She does not join the Bebop through a sentimental invitation. Like almost everybody on the ship, she simply keeps ending up there until temporary proximity starts looking like a crew.
Jet returns to Ganymede and finds Alisa, the woman who left him. Her current boyfriend is also the bounty Jet is pursuing.
Why it matters
Jet wants an explanation for the relationship he lost, but returning does not restore it. The session establishes a rule Cowboy Bebop keeps returning to: finding the past again is not the same as getting it back.
Jet's former police life returns when a prison ship crisis brings him back into contact with the people connected to the loss of his arm.
Why it matters
Like Spike, Jet carries an old professional identity onto the Bebop. Unlike Spike, Jet is capable of confronting that history without treating death as the only honest ending.
An obsolete videotape addressed to Faye leads Spike and Jet across the ruins of Earth looking for equipment capable of playing it.

Why it matters
The search finally gives Faye evidence of a life before the person she remembers being, but the message cannot tell her how to return to it. The most valuable thing delivered to the Bebop has no bounty attached to it.

Jet is not free of regret. He is simply the crew member most capable of carrying regret without making it the only future available to him.
