Death Note · Primary Protagonist / Kira

Light Yagami is a brilliant high school student who finds the Death Note dropped into the human world by the Shinigami Ryuk. After confirming that the notebook can kill anyone whose name and face he knows, Light decides to use it to eliminate criminals and create a world he believes will be morally perfect. The killings turn him into the figure the public calls Kira and draw the attention of the detective L. Light's greatest weapon is not the notebook itself but his ability to plan several moves ahead while maintaining the appearance of an exceptional, ordinary student. The series follows the gap between his stated dream of justice and the increasingly ruthless choices he makes to protect his identity and authority.

Anonymous Deaths Become a Shared Identity

Light begins by killing criminals according to his own private idea of justice. The name Kira comes from the outside. Once people recognize a pattern in the unexplained deaths, the killer becomes a public figure before Light has any organization, spokesperson or formal way to address followers.
What changed
Kira stops being only what Light does. Kira becomes something other people can believe in, fear, imitate, defend and eventually organize around.

Fear, Approval and Falling Crime Change What People Accept

By the time Near and Mello enter the case, Kira has lasted long enough to change the world around the investigation. Supporters treat the killings as justice, opponents have to account for the risk of being named, and Kira's continued existence begins to feel less like an unsolved crime and more like a permanent condition of public life.
Why it matters
Light does not need every person to love Kira. He needs enough people and institutions to behave as though Kira's judgment is real. Social obedience gives him power beyond the notebook itself.

Professional Broadcaster · Private Link to Light

Kiyomi Takada replaces Demegawa as Kira's public representative. Where Demegawa turns Kira into spectacle, Takada can present the message with authority and polish. At the same time, her private relationship with Light turns that public role into part of Kira's hidden communications system.
Why it matters
The public voice and the secret network become the same person. Takada Is a Communication Layer, Not Light's Partner explains why that efficiency also creates a single point of failure.
