Ryuk is the Shinigami who drops his Death Note into the human world because the Shinigami realm has become unbearably boring. Light's decision to use the notebook on a massive scale gives Ryuk exactly the entertainment he wanted. He explains the notebook's rules, develops an obsession with apples and follows Light almost everywhere, but repeatedly reminds him that they are not partners. Ryuk is not interested in justice, Kira's new world or L's investigation. He is interested in seeing what humans do when given power they were never meant to have. That detachment makes him funny and unsettling at the same time. From the beginning, Ryuk also warns Light that when everything ends, he will be the one who writes Light's name in his own Death Note.

The first Death Note Light picks up is not Ryuk's personal notebook. Ryuk stole it from another Shinigami, Sidoh, then dropped it into the human world because he was bored. Ryuk remains beside Light because he is the Shinigami attached to the notebook in human hands, but the physical book itself began as Sidoh's.
Why it matters
The story's first notebook already has a history Light does not know. Years later, its original owner comes looking for it, turning an object Light treats as his weapon into someone else's missing property.
Ownership Is Part of the Plan, Not Bookkeeping
Before surrendering his Kira memories, Light does not simply abandon a notebook and hope for the best. He rearranges which Shinigami is attached to which notebook and prepares the chain of possession that will keep Kira active after he no longer remembers being Kira.
Why it matters
Ownership Relinquishment & Memory Erasure only works as strategy because Light plans the notebook's future before removing his own knowledge of the plan. The object keeps moving even after the planner disappears from his own mind.

Light spends the series turning other people's motives into pieces of his plan. Ryuk is different. Apples, boredom and curiosity keep him nearby, but he never accepts Light's cause as his own. He explains rules when it amuses him, refuses the Eye Deal unless Light pays the price, and never promises to rescue him.
Why it matters
Light can predict Ryuk's personality but never convert it into loyalty. At the end, Ryuk does exactly what he told Light he would do from the beginning: when the game is over, he writes Light's name himself.

A human does not have to own a Death Note to see and hear the Shinigami attached to it. Physical contact with the notebook is enough, and contact with a piece of Death Note paper can carry the same supernatural connection.
Why it matters
Notebook fragments are more than hidden weapons. Contact can expose the supernatural side of the case to someone who has never owned the book, and later the same contact rule becomes central to The Helicopter Memory Recovery & Higuchi's Death.

Light escapes the warehouse wounded, but Ryuk has no reason to spend the rest of Light's human life waiting through capture or imprisonment. From the beginning, Ryuk told Light that when the end came, he would be the one to write Light's name in his own Death Note. He does.
Why it matters
Ryuk never betrays Light because he was never Light's ally. Ryuk Is the Only Major Player Who Never Needs Light to Win remains true all the way to the final name.

Light has Ryuk add false rules to the notebook recovered from Higuchi. The most important claims that an owner will die if thirteen days pass without another name being written. Because Light and Misa were confined for longer than thirteen days while the killings continued, the rule appears to prove they could not have been Kira.
What changed
The fake rule buys Light an alibi, not permanent safety. L Never Fully Accepts the Thirteen-Day Rule. Once he moves toward testing it, Rem understands that Misa can become a suspect again.
