King Piccolo Makes the Dragon Balls Feel Mortal

SPOILER! Open →

Youth restored · Shenron killed · Kami becomes essential

King Piccolo understands the Dragon Balls better than most villains before him. He does not just make a wish. He restores his youth and immediately kills Shenron so nobody else can use the same system against him.

That single decision changes the problem from 'beat the villain and wish everybody back' to 'beat the villain while the reset button is gone.' The later reveal that Shenron can be restored only because Kami still exists quietly expands the divine side of Dragon Ball's world.
Why it matters
The franchise's signature safety net becomes part of the stakes instead of sitting outside them.

Three Years Later, Goku Comes Back Grown Up

Kami's Lookout · Adult Goku · A different kind of training

After King Piccolo, Goku does not simply go home stronger. He reaches Kami's Lookout and discovers that even after defeating the Demon King his fundamentals are still crude compared with Mr. Popo and Earth's Guardian.

When he returns three years later, the visual joke is immediate: everybody is waiting for the same little kid and a tall young man walks in instead. The growth is not only physical. Goku hides his strength, reads opponents better and wastes far less movement.
What changed
The series has aged its protagonist into the version who can plausibly walk straight into Dragon Ball Z. The child-adventure era is ending in front of you.

The Final Tournament Is Already Becoming DBZ

SPOILER! Open →

Piccolo Jr. · Flight · city-level destruction

The 23rd Tournament begins like another bracket and gradually stops behaving like one. Kami enters a human body to fight Piccolo. Piccolo reverses the Mafuba. Goku and Piccolo Jr. escalate until the arena itself barely matters.

Then Goku does something the original series has spent years making extraordinary: he flies under his own power to win the match. No Nimbus. No trick. Just Bukujutsu at exactly the moment Piccolo thinks broken limbs have ended the fight.
Why it matters
Dragon Ball ends its central martial-arts story by showing how far its idea of martial arts has expanded. The next series does not invent that escalation from nothing. It inherits it here.
