BELFANGAN CLOUSEAU
BC
Belfangan Clouseau joins Mithril's Special Response Team as its new commander and immediately becomes one of the few pilots willing to challenge Sosuke directly. In a training match, Clouseau defeats the Arbalest with his M9D Falke even though Sosuke has access to the Lambda Driver. The lesson is not that the Arbalest is weak. It is that Sosuke's distrust of the machine is preventing him from using what it can actually do. Clouseau is strict, confident and much less interested in Sosuke's reputation than in the quality of the soldier standing in front of him. That makes him frustrating and useful in equal measure. The Second Raid uses him as proof that Sosuke's next step cannot come from simply becoming faster or more heavily armed.

ARMAMENT INDEX //
Open page →Monomolecular cutters are Arm Slave close-combat weapons designed to cut through armored opponents at ranges where rifles stop deciding the fight.
How you can tell
Clouseau's M9D Falke makes the point in Episode 8. He does not need a Lambda Driver to put the Arbalest in trouble. Positioning, timing and a pilot who trusts his machine are still enough to win a close fight.
Why it matters
The Second Raid never lets Black Technology completely replace ordinary combat skill. A Lambda Driver is an enormous advantage, but it does not automatically make its pilot better.
ECS allows advanced Arm Slaves such as MITHRIL's M9s and Arbalest to conceal themselves far more effectively than a conventional vehicle of their size should be able to.
How you can tell
The important thing is not that ECS makes a machine magically undetectable. It gives trained operators the ability to approach, observe and ambush from positions that should be impossible for an eight-meter combat machine.
Why it matters
The Second Raid increasingly pits forces with comparable advanced technology against each other. Stealth stops being MITHRIL's private trick and becomes another part of the tactical contest.
The M9 remains the machine doing most of MITHRIL's actual work. Mao and Kurz operate M9s throughout the series, while Clouseau's M9D Falke shows how far the basic platform can be pushed without adding a Lambda Driver.
The Breakdown
Amalgam's arrival changes the balance because MITHRIL is no longer the only organization fielding machines that conventional militaries cannot easily match. The M9 is still excellent. The problem is that excellence is no longer enough to guarantee technological superiority.
Why it matters
That shift is one of The Second Raid's quietest escalations. MITHRIL has not suddenly become weak. Someone else has caught up.
The M9D Falke is Clouseau's specialized M9 variant. It does not carry a Lambda Driver, which is precisely why its Episode 8 duel with the Arbalest matters.
The Breakdown
Sousuke assumes that a machine capable of beating the Arbalest must possess some hidden technical advantage. Clouseau proves otherwise. He wins with a conventional M9-derived machine because he understands his own Arm Slave better than Sousuke understands the Arbalest.
Why it matters
The Falke destroys Sousuke's favorite excuse. He cannot keep blaming the Arbalest for every failed Lambda Driver activation once a machine without one beats him cleanly.

The attempt to extract Bruno from Sicily turns into a running fight as Amalgam forces close in on the SRT.
A black Arm Slave suddenly intervenes and destroys the pursuing enemy machine before disappearing again. Sousuke and the others do not yet know that the pilot is Belfangan Clouseau.
A black Arm Slave suddenly intervenes and destroys the pursuing enemy machine before disappearing again. Sousuke and the others do not yet know that the pilot is Belfangan Clouseau.
Why it matters
Clouseau is introduced through competence before personality. By the time he walks into the SRT as their new commander, the audience has already seen what his Falke can do.
Episode 8 · Merida Island · Result: Clouseau Wins
Clouseau challenges Sousuke to an Arm Slave training duel after recognizing how badly Sousuke's relationship with the Arbalest has deteriorated.
The Breakdown
The Falke has no Lambda Driver. Clouseau still controls the fight because he treats his machine as an extension of himself while Sousuke treats the Arbalest like defective equipment he has been forced to use.
Why it matters
This is one of the most important fights in The Second Raid precisely because nothing explodes. Clouseau proves the problem is not that the Arbalest is weak. Sousuke does not trust it.
LAMBDA DRIVER MECHANICS //
Open page →The Second Raid does not solve the origin of the Lambda Driver. What it does is make its operating problem much clearer.
The system turns the pilot's mental intent into physical force. That can produce barriers or attacks ordinary Arm Slaves cannot reproduce, but only when the pilot can form and sustain the required image.
The system turns the pilot's mental intent into physical force. That can produce barriers or attacks ordinary Arm Slaves cannot reproduce, but only when the pilot can form and sustain the required image.
The Breakdown
Gates can use his system aggressively. Sousuke cannot reliably use his at all. Clouseau can beat Sousuke without a Lambda Driver because Sousuke's machine cannot compensate for a pilot whose attention and confidence are falling apart.
Why it matters
TSR turns the Lambda Driver from a mysterious superweapon into a brutally visible measure of Sousuke's mental state.
The Arbalest Is Not Rejecting Sousuke
Open →Clouseau's Episode 8 Lesson
It is tempting to read the Arbalest's unreliable Lambda Driver as a temperamental prototype failing its pilot. The Second Raid pushes hard in the opposite direction.
Clouseau beats the Arbalest with an M9D Falke that does not have a Lambda Driver at all. Al continues functioning. The machine can move, fight and communicate.
Clouseau beats the Arbalest with an M9D Falke that does not have a Lambda Driver at all. Al continues functioning. The machine can move, fight and communicate.
The Breakdown
Sousuke is the unstable component. He dislikes depending on a weapon he cannot operate through ordinary procedure, and that distrust becomes self-defeating because the Lambda Driver requires exactly the kind of mental commitment he is withholding.
Why it matters
Once Sousuke stops treating the Arbalest as the problem, the machine stops looking unreliable.
THE HONG KONG ESCALATION //
Open page →The Divided City
Open →North China · South China · One Arm Slave Trying to Restart the War
Hong Kong is already politically unstable when Xia Yu Fan begins attacking both northern and southern forces with a stolen Lambda Driver-equipped Codarl.
The Breakdown
The destruction is designed to look like escalation between the two sides. Every attack makes retaliation more likely, and MITHRIL is working against a clock rather than simply hunting another Arm Slave.
Gauron later tells Sousuke that the chaos was also meant to draw Kashim toward him.
Gauron later tells Sousuke that the chaos was also meant to draw Kashim toward him.
Why it matters
The city is not incidental scenery. The plan works because one unidentified Arm Slave can exploit a political division that already exists.
