Lady Une begins as Treize's ruthless field commander, willing to assassinate political leaders and threaten colonies if that is what the mission requires. Then Gundam Wing starts showing another Une: gentle, diplomatic and sincerely interested in reconciliation between Earth and space. The series presents those sides almost as separate personalities, even using her glasses as a visual cue, but eventually treats them as pieces of one woman rather than a permanent gimmick. Her absolute devotion to Treize helps create the split in the first place. After being badly wounded, Une returns with a more integrated sense of herself and becomes increasingly important to efforts that move beyond OZ's original agenda. She is one of the stranger character arcs in a show full of them, and also one of the better examples of Gundam Wing letting an antagonist change without pretending the earlier violence never happened.
