Not whether Kenshin can fight. He clearly can. Whether the vow holds when the world starts making very good arguments for breaking it. The cross-shaped scar on his cheek comes from two different sources. The show gets to that in its own time. Slight, red-haired, violet-eyed, addressed constantly as a wanderer because that is what he decided to become when the killing stopped.

Saitō invaded the Kamiya Dojo disguised as a medicine seller, testing Kenshin to see if the peaceful wanderer could survive the impending Kyoto crisis. The duel escalated into a brutal Bakumatsu rematch as Kenshin's golden eyes resurfaced.
Shingetsu Village · Draw / Both Sakabatō & Nagasono Kotetsu Broken
Kenshin confronted "Heaven's Sword" Sojiro Seta in a desolate village. Sojiro's suppression of visible emotion makes his intent unusually difficult for Kenshin to read, while his extraordinary speed gives Kenshin almost no time to compensate.
The Breakdown
Both execute high-speed sword draws. Sojiro's speed is enough to meet Kenshin's god-speed directly, and the collision breaks both Kenshin's Sakabatō and Sojiro's Nagasone Kotetsu. The first duel ends without settling who is stronger, but it gives Kenshin his first clear warning that Kyoto contains opponents his old level of skill may not be enough to defeat.
Kyoto Mount Hiei Compound · Decisive Kenshin Victory (Shishio Thermal Combustion)
An epic showdown against the former Bakumatsu assassin Makoto Shishio. Having survived being burned alive, Shishio's internal body temperature was dangerously unstable, capping his total combat limit to 15 minutes.
The Breakdown
After absorbing strikes from Saitō, Sanosuke, and Aoshi, Shishio faced Kenshin's ultimate Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki. Kenshin's reverse-blade strike shattered Shishio's sword blade, and Shishio's body overheated past its thermal threshold, catching fire from his own blood and oils.
Kyoto Mount Hiei Compound · Decisive Kenshin Victory
Oniwabanshū leader Aoshi Shinomori challenges Kenshin to prove his strength and honor the memory of the men who died under his command, using his dual kodachi and Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren.
The Breakdown
Kenshin refuses to validate Aoshi's belief that victory or death is the only way to give his fallen men meaning. Their second duel becomes less about settling an old score than breaking the obsession Aoshi has built around that loss. Kenshin defeats him without giving him the death he thinks he wants.
Kyoto Mount Hiei Compound · Decisive Kenshin Victory
Kenshin faces Sojiro again inside Mount Hiei. This time Sojiro pushes Shukuchi to its highest speed, but Kenshin's calm refusal to accept Shishio's "strong live, weak die" philosophy begins breaking through the emotional suppression Sojiro has relied on since childhood.
The Breakdown
Once Sojiro's buried anger and confusion surface, the unreadable smile that protected him is gone. He commits to Shuntensatsu, combining Shukuchi with his fastest battōjutsu attack. Kenshin answers with Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki and wins without killing him. The defeat destroys more than Sojiro's swordsmanship advantage; it leaves him unable to keep borrowing Shishio's worldview as an answer to his own past.
