Fighter for hire who starts the series as an opponent and becomes Kenshin's most reliable companion. Former member of the Sekiho Army, one of the Meiji government's early and deliberate betrayals, which gives him entirely legitimate reasons for the chip on his shoulder the size of a building. Enormous, hits things, does not use a sword by preference. His history gives the show its most direct access to the real human cost of the Meiji Restoration and what it required of the people who believed in it. His friendship with Kenshin is the warmest relationship the series produces.

Sanosuke confronts the fallen monk Anji inside Shishio's compound, testing the Futae no Kiwami he learned from the very man now standing against him.
The Breakdown
Anji can apply Futae no Kiwami through far more than a single punch and overwhelms Sanosuke with the technique's full-body applications. Sanosuke survives by pushing the principle farther under pressure and refusing Anji's conclusion that grief justifies endless destruction. The fight ends with Anji forced to confront the difference between remembering the dead and living only for revenge.

The Sekiho Army fought for the Imperial cause while spreading promises that the new government would reduce taxes. When those promises became politically inconvenient, the government branded the unit a "false army" and executed its leaders, including the man Sanosuke knew as Captain Sagara.
Why it matters
Sanosuke's hatred of the Meiji government is not adolescent rebellion. His first political education was watching the winning side erase people who had helped it win. That history is why Kenshin, a former Imperial assassin, initially looks like exactly the kind of man Sanosuke should hate.
