Details & Synopsis
A geological disaster tears part of Kanagawa away from mainland Japan and creates the Lost Ground. One percent of the children born there develop Alter powers, the ability to reshape matter through will. The mainland responds the way institutions usually respond to people it cannot control: containment, classification, and a special police force called HOLY.

Kazuma is a Native Alter who takes mercenary jobs because rent still exists after the apocalypse. Ryuho is a HOLY officer who believes control is the only thing keeping the Lost Ground from collapsing. Their powers are different, their politics are different, and both of them solve emotional problems by hitting the other one harder.

s-CRY-ed aired in 2001, directed by Goro Taniguchi years before Code Geass. Adult Swim picked it up in 2005, where Steve Blum's Kazuma helped the show fit perfectly beside the network's louder action lineup. It never became the biggest title in that block, but the people who watched it remember exactly how committed it was. No ironic distance. No apology for shouting attack names. No attempt to make the rivalry healthier.

Twenty-six episodes built around two men who would rather punch through the world than admit the other one understands them.

HOLD, HOLY & the Mainland

HOLD Is the Government Arm; HOLY Is Its Alter Unit

Police Power · Alter Special Operations · Lost Ground Control

HOLD is the Mainland government's police and administrative power inside the Lost Ground. HOLY sits inside that system as the special unit made up of Alter users. That distinction matters because Kazuma spends the early series treating every uniform as the same enemy while Ryuho sees HOLY as the tool that keeps uncontrolled Alter violence from swallowing ordinary people.
Why it matters
Kazuma sees a cage. Ryuho sees the danger that shaped his childhood. Neither man is completely imagining the problem. The argument is over who gets to decide what control is allowed to cost.

HOLY: Alter Users Policing Alter Users

HOLD Special Unit · Martin Zigmarl · Alter Enforcement
HOLY is HOLD's Alter-user special unit: an organization that controls Native Alters by recruiting Alter users of its own. Ryuho, Cougar, Scheris, Asuka and the rest are not ordinary police carrying unusual weapons. Their Alters are the reason the unit can pursue people whose abilities conventional forces cannot reliably contain.
Why it matters
HOLY is built around a contradiction the series keeps returning to. The institution treats uncontrolled Alter power as a danger while depending on exactly that same power to enforce its authority. That is why somebody can belong to HOLY without agreeing with everything HOLD or the Mainland does.

The Great Alter Hunt Turns Containment Into a Roundup

Episode 6 · Mainland Pressure · Native Alters Become Targets

Zigmarl does not launch the Great Alter Hunt because HOLY suddenly discovers one new threat. Pressure from the Mainland pushes the organization toward a broad capture operation against Native Alters across the Lost Ground. Kazuma and Kimishima respond by trying to organize people who normally have no reason to trust one another.
What changed
The fight stops being Kazuma versus whichever HOLY member shows up that week. The system starts treating an entire class of people as a population to be processed, and resistance becomes larger than Kazuma's personal refusal to be arrested.

Cougar Works for HOLY Without Ever Belonging to Its Logic

Uniform on the Outside · Personal Code Underneath

Straight Cougar is useful to HOLY because speed solves problems faster than bureaucracy ever can. That does not mean HOLY owns him. He helps Mimori, guides Kazuma, protects Ryuho and eventually opposes Mujo whenever the organization's orders collide with his own judgment.
Why it matters
Cougar demonstrates early that wearing the uniform and accepting the institution's worldview are two different things. Ryuho takes much longer to discover the same separation.

Mimori Learns the Lost Ground by Leaving the Safe Side of the Wall

Scientist · Insider · Witness

Mimori arrives believing science and HOLY can help people if the right people behave responsibly. Her position changes because she keeps going where the organization would rather describe the Lost Ground from a distance. Treating Kanami, meeting Native Alters and learning what happens to captives steadily makes the official version harder to accept.
Why it matters
Mimori does not begin as an enemy of HOLY. She becomes dangerous to the system because she keeps comparing what it says with what she can actually see.

Scheris and Asuka Show Two Ways Loyalty to HOLY Can Break

SPOILER!

Scheris Chooses Ryuho · Asuka Starts Questioning the Uniform

Scheris and Asuka begin on the same side of the wall, but HOLY does not mean the same thing to either of them. Asuka's defeat by Kazuma forces him to hear the Native side of the conflict and question the certainty he brought into the field. Scheris remains much more emotionally tied to Ryuho than to the institution around him.
Why it matters
Neither character needs to become Kazuma to stop functioning as a simple piece of HOLY. Asuka's confidence in the organization cracks when experience contradicts it. Scheris ultimately makes her defining choice for Ryuho himself, not for HOLD, HOLY or the Mainland. Their actual powers belong in Eternity Eight and Eternal Devote; this card is about what they do with their loyalties.

Zigmarl Believes Control Can Still Protect the Lost Ground

SPOILER!

Authoritarian · Compromised · Not Mujo

Zigmarl is responsible for the organization that hunts Kazuma and captures Native Alters, so the series never lets him off the hook. But his goal is not identical to Mujo's. Zigmarl still treats HOLY as a structure that can contain Alter violence and preserve the Lost Ground under Mainland pressure.
Why it matters
That difference explains why Mujo's arrival creates conflict inside the supposed ruling side. The old system is oppressive. Mujo intends to turn the people and powers inside it into raw material.

Kyoji Mujo Arrives When the Mainland Stops Trusting HOLY

SPOILER!

Mainland Administrator · Direct Intervention · Zigmarl Sidelined

Mujo does not rise through HOLY because its members choose him. He arrives from the Mainland after the Second Great Uprising, bringing authority, refined Alter users and a much more aggressive idea of what the Lost Ground is for.
What changed
Zigmarl built an authoritarian system around containing Alter users. Mujo treats that system as infrastructure he can take over. HOLY personnel, captured Native Alters and the research surrounding the Other Side all become pieces in a project centered on Mujo himself. Mujo Turns Refinement Into Extraction is where that difference becomes physical.

Mujo Turns Refinement Into Extraction

SPOILER!

Captured Alters · Forced Enhancement · Power as Resource

Mujo inherits a system already willing to capture and refine Alter users, then removes whatever restraint was left in the process. Ayase and Biff return stronger because he has altered them. Captured users become experiments, weapons and stepping stones toward the Other Side.
What changed
Under Zigmarl, refinement is presented as the price of serving HOLY. Under Mujo, the person attached to the power barely matters. Alter ability becomes something that can be harvested.

Zigmarl Lies to Ryuho Because He Thinks Pain Is the Only Lever Left

SPOILER!

Episode 22 · Alter Alias · One Last Lesson

During their final fight, Zigmarl tells Ryuho that Ryuho caused his mother's death by opening the Other Side. The claim is designed to enrage him enough to reach a higher level of Zetsuei. Only after Ryuho defeats him does Zigmarl admit that the accusation was a lie.
Why it matters
It is an ugly final expression of Zigmarl's worldview. Even when he wants Ryuho to surpass HOLY, he still tries to manufacture that growth through control, pressure and trauma.

Defeating Mujo Does Not Defeat the Mainland

SPOILER!

Episode 25 · Refined Alter Forces · The Political Problem Remains

Mujo is the final villain, but he is not the entire system. After Kazuma destroys him, the Mainland still sends refined Alter forces into the Lost Ground. Kazuma and Ryuho end up doing together what neither could imagine at the beginning: defending the same land from outside control.
Why it matters
The ending refuses the easy answer that one evil man caused everything. Mujo can die and the political relationship between the Lost Ground and the Mainland can still be broken.
