After the Imperial Envoy is murdered inside Ayamaro's residence, the blame falls on samurai and the city becomes hostile territory. Kambei's growing group has to escape while the magistrate's forces close in.
The Breakdown
The important victory is movement, not a body count. Kambei uses deception, timing and the chaos of the city to keep the still-incomplete group alive long enough to get out of Kogakyo and continue toward Kanna.

The Breakdown
The finale is not one clean boss fight. Heihachi dies helping cripple the Capital, Katsushiro accidentally kills Kyuzo, Kambei reaches Ukyo, and Kikuchiyo ultimately gives his life to keep the falling fortress from destroying Kanna.
The system collapses at the same time the team does. Only Kambei, Katsushiro and Shichiroji remain when the village returns to planting.

What changed
From here forward, becoming a samurai means living with what his own decisions do to other people.
The surviving samurai are not handed a new kingdom to rule. The village returns to its own life.
Why it matters
For all the machinery, imperial politics and giant battles added by the anime, the ending understands what the mission was for. Kanna survives long enough to stop needing the Seven.
