ALPHONSE ELRIC

Alphonse Elric
AE

Fullmetal Alchemist · Protagonist

His entire body was the toll. Ed bound his soul to a suit of armor at the last possible second before the Gate took him completely. Seven feet of medieval plate steel with no heartbeat, no sense of touch, no taste, no smell. Gentle past all reasonable explanation given what he has been through. The 2003 anime adds a particular cruelty unique to this version: the question of whether Al's memories of his childhood are real, or whether they were implanted by Ed to give the soul in the armor something to hold onto. Whether the person inside the armor has always been there. The show does not answer this quickly.

Stage 1 · Theory

The 2003 anime shows the qualifying exam beginning with a written test. Edward and Alphonse both prepare for it while staying with Shou Tucker, and both make it through this portion.

The important story detail is that raw talent is not enough. State certification is presented as something the military tests, filters and controls before an alchemist ever receives the silver watch.

Stage 2 · The State decides whether it wants you

After the written portion comes an interview. Edward advances; Alphonse does not continue because Mustang warns that a physical examination of an empty suit of armor would expose the secret the brothers are trying to protect.
Why it matters
The exam is already asking for more than alchemical skill. Becoming a State Alchemist means allowing the military to inspect the person behind the research, which is exactly what Al cannot safely do.

Do Not Attempt Human Transmutation

SPOILER! Open →

Rule 3 · The taboo the Elrics already broke

Human transmutation is forbidden, and Edward and Alphonse understand why before Edward ever takes the State exam. Their attempt to restore Trisha cost Ed two limbs and Al his entire body.

In the 2003 continuity, the consequences reach even farther because failed human transmutations are tied directly to the existence of Homunculi.
Why it matters
Ed enters State service already carrying proof that the most famous rule of alchemy is not an abstract warning. He and Al are living aftermath.
