Sai joins Team 7 as Sasuke's replacement, sent by Danzo from the secretive Root organization. He was raised to suppress emotion, abandon personal attachments and complete missions without questioning what they cost, which makes his first attempts at friendship painfully artificial. His ink-based Super Beast Scroll turns drawings into birds, beasts and other useful creations, but the more important change is social rather than tactical. Naruto and Sakura force Sai to confront the value of bonds Root trained out of him. His assignment also carries a hidden order to assassinate Sasuke, placing him between Danzo's expectations and the teammates he is beginning to care about. Sai eventually chooses Team 7 over Root's isolation, even if learning how normal people talk to each other takes considerably longer.

The search mission finally reaches Sasuke, but the reunion immediately becomes a one-sided confrontation as he overwhelms Naruto, Sai, Sakura, and Yamato with speed, swordplay, and Chidori-enhanced attacks.
The Breakdown
Sasuke begins preparing a finishing technique before Orochimaru stops him, arguing that keeping Konoha alive is useful while the Leaf continues eliminating Akatsuki members.
